Diploma in International Research Ethics

Great concern persists throughout the region about unethical research and the enormous increase in the volume of clinical research in developing countries, especially in relation to HIV/AIDS. This unique programme, taught by a multidisciplinary Faculty with national and international reputations in bioethics, will have a considerable impact on the ethics of research in Southern Africa.

IRENSA will train a cohort of 10 students each year for four years with the intention of producing a critical mass of mid-career faculty trained in research ethics for Southern African regions. The course will run over an academic year and comprise three two-week on-site intensive educational activities, a home based practicum and a course guided reading programme between modules. IRENSA's focus will be on both individual and institutional capacity strengthening in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
